But the teacher said, だが 先生は言った "What you doing, young man." 「あなた 何してるの」 "I'm painting flowers, see!" 「花を描いてるんだよ ほら見て！」
"Well, this is not the time for art, young man. 「あなたねえ 今は 図画の時間じゃないのよ And anyway, flowers are green and red. それに、花は 赤と緑でしょ There's a time for everything, young man, 何をするにも 決まった時間があるし A way things should be done. 決まったやり方というものが あるの You've got to show concern for everyone else 少しは ほかの人たちのことも考えなさい You're not the only one." あなた一人じゃないんだからね」

But the little boy said, 男の子は言った "There are so many colors in the rainbow 「虹には 色がいっぱいあるよ So many colors in the morning sun 朝日にも 色がいっぱい So many colors in the flower 花にも いっぱい and I see every one" ぼく ぜんぶ見えるんだ」
Well the teacher said, "You're sassy! すると 先生は言った 「素直じゃないわね There's a way that things should be ものごとには 決まりというものが あるのよ And you'll paint flowers the way they are 花の色は ちゃんと 決まりどおりに ぬるものなの So repeat after me." さあ、先生の言うとおりに言ってごらん」
She said, そして 言った "Flowers are red, green leaves are green 「花は赤です 葉は緑です There's no need to see flowers any other way 特別の見方は いりません Than the way they always have been seen." 昔からある 普通の見方で いいのです」
But the little boy said again, けれども男の子は また言った "There are so many colors in the rainbow 「でも 虹には 色がいっぱい So many colors in the morning sun 朝日にも 色がいっぱい So many colors in the flower 花にも 色がいっぱい and I see every one" ぼく ぜんぶ見えるよ」
Well, the teacher put him in a corner すると先生は 男の子を教室の隅に追いやって She said, "It's for your own good. 言った 「これは あなたのためよ You won't come out 'til you get it right 先生の言うことが ちゃんとわかって And are responding like you should." それに従えるようになるまで ここにいなさい」
Well finally he got lonely 男の子は 一人ぼっちに耐えられなくなり Frightened thoughts filled his head 怖い思いで いっぱいになった And he went up to the teacher それでとうとう 先生のところへ行って And this is what he said. こう言った

Well, time went by like it always does. さて 時は過ぎた。 いつものことだね He moved to another town. 男の子は 別の町へ引っ越して And the little boy went to another school 別の学校へ行った
And this is what he found. そして そこで出会ったものは The teacher there was smiling. にこにこ笑顔の先生の この言葉 She said, "Painting should be fun 「絵は 楽しく描かなくっちゃね And there are so many colors in a flower 花には 色がいっぱいあるわ So let's paint every one." その全部の色を ぬってみましょう」
But that little boy painted flowers けれども 男の子は 花の色を In neat rows of green and red きっちりと 緑と赤の隊列に ぬりわけた And when the teacher asked him why, 先生が わけをたずねると This is what he said: 男の子は こう答えた
"Flowers are red, green leaves are green 「花は赤です 葉は緑です There's no need to see flowers any other way 特別の見方は いりません Than the way they always have been seen." 昔からある ふつうの見方で いいのです」
But there must still be a way だけど まだ あきらめちゃいけない To have our children say...... ぼくらの子供たちが こう言いだすことを

初めて聴いた歌ですが、メアリー・リトル版が好きです。歌詞もうまくアレンジして歌ってますね。
小生、下手な絵を趣味としていますが、この歌の通り、色は感じたまま塗ればいいと思いますよ。空がピンクでも、唇がシアンでも・・・感じ方はいろいろ、絵具もいろいろ、人生もいろいろ。
